Funding and Scholarships for the Master’s and PhD Programs in Chemistry at Western University, Canada

Every international student accepted into the program (M.Sc. or Ph.D.), that does not have funding from their home country,  will be offered a yearly stipend of $27,500/year.

Part of this money comes from our department’s research funds and part of it comes from your duty to serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) supervising undergraduate teaching labs for 280 hours/year. The stipend provides a monthly salary of approximately $2291 before deductions.

In addition to the financial support available from federal and provincial sources and research grant support, Western offers a variety of internal awards that are among the best available to outstanding scholars in Canada. What are the Admission Requirements for the Master’s & PhD in Chemistry at Western University?

Admission Requirements

• Four-year, Bachelor of Science Honours degree in chemistry (or equivalent) from a recognized university, college or institute.
• An overall average of 75% (B+) or higher in the last two years of the undergraduate degree.

• Doctoral Program

  Applicants must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university, college or institute, and provide evidence of research potential. The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requires at least a 70% average in the Master’s degree, as determined by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Additional Requirements

• Previous degrees must have a research component.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose first language is not English must furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language by a satisfactory achievement within the last two years in one of the following (even if your courses were taught in English):

• The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score for chemistry is 90, with no individual score below 20 for the internet based version; [Western’s TOEFL ID is 0984]. TOEFL Study Guide: http://www.discoverbusiness.us/education/online-mba/resources/toefl/
• The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) of the British Council: The minimum acceptable score for chemistry is 7 in each category out of 9 in each category. The IELTS is offered in 6 test centres in the US and 3 in Canada.
• The Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL Assessment). The minimum acceptable score is 70 in each section. The CAEL Assessment is offered in several countries throughout the world as well as Canada.

Students who are required to present evidence of proficiency in English must make their own arrangements to write the TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB or CAEL and to have the official results sent directly to the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the testing agency.

Other formal evidence of graduate level proficiency in English (as determined by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies) may be considered in lieu of these test scores. For the French and Spanish programs only, evidence of proficiency in English is a degree requirement but not a requirement for admission.
