About the Law Programs at Western University: Study in Canada

The Law program at Western University offers both a Master’s and PhD options.

Western Law offers two program options for those wishing to complete an LLM.

The traditional Thesis-Based Option aims to foster advanced research and scholarship in law, and is best suited for students wishing to pursue academic careers. This program offers training in key theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches to legal research and analysis. Graduates will be equipped to contribute to scholarly and political debate, and to develop answers to many emerging questions about the role of law in society.

The Project-Based Option is aimed at legal practitioners and recent law graduates who wish to enhance their professional credentials. Students in this program choose from a wide range of elective courses, allowing them to deepen their expertise in a particular field. Students also complete a Major Research Project designed to reflect their professional or academic interests, focusing on legal or policy issues requiring complex real-world solutions.

Funding & Scholarships for the Master’s and PhD Law Programs at Western University: Study in Canada

 

All students are offered full funding, which covers tuition and living expenses. In addition, many students are eligible for entrance scholarships on top of the base funding. The average funding for Master’s program at Western University is $23,352/ year, while Doctoral degree is 33,271/ year.

Full-time PhD students (domestic and international) are guaranteed funding equal to at least tuition plus $13,000 for four years, which may take into account any external funding received by the student.

Admissions Requirements for the Scholarships in Law at Western University

Master of Law (LLM) Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent with a minimum average of B (74%) in the last two years of full-time study.
  • A sample of academic writing, such as a research paper, thesis or a published journal article. The subject matter of the academic writing sample must be legal.

PhD Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Law with a B+ (78%) average.
  • Students from disciplines other than law may be considered if they demonstrate adequate preparation in legal theory and methodology (at least three full-course equivalents above the first-year level including one seminar).
  • A sample of academic writing, such as a research paper, thesis or a published journal article. The subject matter of the academic writing sample must be legal.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose first language is not English must furnish evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language:
