The Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada is offering scholarships for both Master of Science and PhD in Biology for the Fall and Spring Admissions. The program is fully funded for the defined length, and is designed to provide financial support for strong candidates who are going to pursue Master’s degree and PhD in the institution.

PhD: $19,000

The graduate program at Memorial University offers higher education with a focus on preparing prospective students for careers in research in the field and other related disciplines. Memorial University’s Department of Biology offers opportunities for strong students, and has one of the best student-faculty ratios. The department offers both MSc and PhD programs, and is also part of the interdisciplinary Cognitive and Behavioural Ecology (CABE) program

Program Description 

  • MSc – The Master of Science program involves courses and a thesis and can be completed in two years of full-time study. 
  • PhD – The PhD program involves courses, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis, and can be completed in four years of full-time study.

Application Deadlines: 

  • Fall Admission – January 31 
  • Spring Admission – January 31

Tuition for International Students: 

MSc:  $1,074-$1,611/semester

PhD:  $1,499/semester 

Funding and Eligibility for the Biology Scholarships

Memorial University of Newfoundland offers highly competitive funding and scholarship packages to full-time graduate students who are eligible academically, both domestic and international students, in all eligible graduate research programs. Since the institution offers competitive funding packages, the amount of funding an applicant will receive upon successful admission will depend on the strength of the candidate’s application.

The following are funding eligibility periods for Memorial University graduate students maintaining full-time status and academic standing:

  • One-year master’s programs: one year (three semesters)
  • All other master’s programs: two years (six semesters)
  • PhD programs: four years (twelve semesters)
  • Transfer to a new program: the start of the eligibility period of the program being transferred to is the commencement date of the program being transferred from

Sources of Internal Funding   

  • School of Graduate Studies fellowships – ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per year
  • graduate assistantships (employment) – ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 in accordance with the TAUMUN collective agreement
  • supervisor grants/contracts – ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 per year
  • special initiatives funding – ranging from $5,000 to $8,000 per year

Successful applicants will be automatically considered for the Scholarships.

Admission Requirements for the Biology Scholarships: 

  • MSc – Bachelor’s degree (minimum second class) in an appropriate area of study
  • PhD – Master’s degree in an appropriate area of study
