Bachelor’s & Master’s Scholarships at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
Tongarewa Scholarship
The Tongarewa Scholarships celebrate the University’s commitment to its international student community. The University awards a range of these scholarships to international students each year. This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will go towards tuition fees for one year of study. Applicants can be either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree programme at Victoria University of Wellington.
Scholarships are awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence. They apply to study in the year following application and will be credited to tuition fees. Recipients of these scholarships are guaranteed an offer of a place in one of the Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by University Accommodation Wellington by their deadline.
Eligibility Requirement of the Tongarewa Scholarship
Applicants must be:
- international students who are paying full international fees
- entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.

Colin Aikman Award
This Award has been established in Colin Aikman’s memory to provide opportunities for students to study in the areas of constitutional law, human rights, international law or other issues affecting the South Pacific.
Deen Welfare Trust Education Scholarship
These scholarships are for undergraduate students studying at Victoria University of Wellington who plan to connect their studies to the field of Education. The University recognises there are barriers to accessing and succeeding at the University, so preference will be given to awarding this scholarship to students from a migrant or refugee background.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of one Education-related paper in the year following their scholarship application.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a degree program at Victoria University of Wellington in the year following application.
- Applicants must be experiencing financial challenges.
Infratec Scholarship
This scholarship is for Māori, Pasifika or women students majoring in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours programme with an intention to choose a specialization in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering in their third year.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in the first year of a full-time in a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours majoring in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must have an intention to choose a specialisation in Renewable Energy Systems Engineering in their third year of study.
- Applicants must belong to an Equity group (Māori/Pasifika/Women).
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
- Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit, motivation, future potential, and commitment to studying renewable energy and working in the field of renewable energy engineering.
Laerdal New Zealand Nursing & Midwifery Scholarship
This scholarship is for students undertaking the Bachelor of Midwifery program or the Master of Nursing Practice program at the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Practice at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol or be enrolled in the Bachelor of Midwifery programme or the Master of Nursing Practice programme at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington in the year following this application.
- The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and commitment to becoming a registered nurse or midwife.
Latin American Academic Achievement Scholarship
The purpose of the Latin American Academic Achievement Scholarship is to encourage high-achieving, well rounded Latin American international students to Victoria University of Wellington and to support them in their studies.
- Applicants must be enrolling in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree (Master’s level) at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be new students who have not previously been enrolled at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must have met the English Language Requirements for study at Victoria University of Wellington.

New Zealand International Student Grant 2021/2022
The purpose of the New Zealand International Student Grant 2021/2022 is to support new international students currently onshore in New Zealand to study at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be enrolling in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Students must be onshore in Wellington studying in person and on campus. Students studying online are not eligible.
- Applicants must be new students.
- Graduate Certificates, Postgraduate Certificates, PhD and EAP students are not eligible to apply.
Sir John Anderson Memorial Scholarship
This Scholarship is open to students entering their first year of study and majoring in a degree programme offered by the School of Accounting and Commercial Law. The scholarship is intended to support emerging leaders who have chosen a career in commerce and are committed to undergraduate study at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be New Zealand citizens, Permanent Residents or hold a residence class visa to remain in New Zealand
- Applicants must be facing financial hardship that may restrict their ability to enter tertiary education
- Applicants must have achieved an NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit (or the equivalent in another qualification)
- Applicants will also be assessed on the following criteria:
- Leadership qualities
- Involvement in community, sporting and cultural activities
- Willingness to give back to the community
The Todd Scholarship
This scholarship is to support a student undertaking the four-year Bachelor of Midwifery course at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be intending to enrol in or already enrolled in a full-time undergraduate Bachelor of Midwifery degree at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Preference will be given to applicants experiencing financial hardship.
- Students must achieve satisfactory academic progress throughout the year to in order to retain the scholarship for the full tenure.
Victoria Equity Grants For Students From Refugee Backgrounds
These grants are to assist students from refugee backgrounds who experience financial challenges to undertaking study at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be from a refugee background.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a degree programme (undergraduate or postgraduate) at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must have studied at least one trimester in the previous academic year at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Applicants must be experiencing financial challenges.
Wellington Doctoral Scholarship
These scholarships are intended to encourage and support doctoral study (PhD) at Victoria University of Wellington.
