Political Science Scholarship at Eastern Illinois University

Political Science Scholarship at Eastern Illinois University

Eastern has gained its reputation by offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs taught by an experienced and caring staff. It is consistently placed in the top third of Midwest universities in its class by U.S. News & World Report. Eastern University provides a textbook rental scheme, which saves the typical student hundreds of dollars every semester in addition to low tuition, fees, and room and board costs.

On the safe, compact 320-acre campus, a number of great on-campus living options are available. Eastern’s graduation and retention rates are far higher than the state and national norms, and its success extends beyond graduation: year after year, the university scores high in job placement, alumni satisfaction, and employer satisfaction.

For students interested in American government, comparative politics, or international relations, the Master of Arts in Political Science degree offers a flexible curriculum. Advanced analytical, methodological, and theoretical approaches to political science will be taught to students. Students will be prepared for jobs in public affairs at all levels of government, as well as legal vocations, campaigns, lobbying, private sector government relations, and higher education. Students can also prepare for a Ph.D. or legal studies through this program. There are internships offered in government, politics, and the judicial system.

Political Science Scholarship at Eastern Illinois University

Eastern Illinois University’s MA in Political Science program is primarily face-to-face and offers a flexible program for students interested in working in the following fields:

  • Advanced graduate studies (Ph.D., J.D.)
  • Community college teaching
  • Government agencies
  • International relations and development
  • Non-profit and civic management/leadership
  • Lobbying and governmental relations
  • Election campaigns

Students can finish their M.A. in two semesters and one summer by taking a variety of courses offered by the department. Students who want a different pace can, however, take only one course every semester—the option is theirs!

This program is excellent for overseas students who can only take one online course per semester. Students who choose this option can mix and match their degree programs, taking online electives or electives in public administration to improve their professional abilities. Graduate assistantships are also available to full-time students.

The program’s students come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Many of our students have political science degrees, but we also have students with history, sociology, psychology, economics, English, communications, journalism, and general studies degrees. Gender, race, ethnicity, ideology, and social status are all represented among the students.

Political Science Program Eligibility

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution approved by Eastern Illinois University and a minimum undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale or a 2.75 GPA on the last 60 hours of graded academic course work to be eligible for admission to the Graduate School and for degree candidacy or certificate admission. Admission to the Graduate School does not ensure that you will be accepted into a degree program. The Graduate School requires post-graduate candidates to have completed a graduate degree from an accredited school that has been authorized by Eastern Illinois University, as well as a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Graduate Assistantships

Once accepted into the MA Political Science program, you may be eligible for a graduate assistantship, which pays a 9-month stipend and covers tuition for two semesters and one summer. Graduate assistants spend 18 hours per week working with instructors on research projects and assisting with grading. On weekdays and on occasion on weekends, all graduate assistants must be accessible on campus.

  • The current stipend is $1000 per month, from the end of September through the end of May, for a total of $9000 (for a full year assistantship).
  • You can apply for an assistantship when you apply to the program.
  • Spring assistantship applications are due November 1. It is very rare to have assistantships available for students for the Spring semester. Decisions will be made no later than December 1st.
  • Fall assistantship applications are due March 1. Fall assistantship decisions are made in the middle of March.
  • A 2.75 GPA in undergraduate, strong letters of recommendation, and a specific and detailed personal statement are key parts of a successful application. Assistantships are very competitive.

In addition to departmental assistantships, additional assistantships exist across the university.
