Political Science Scholarship at Memorial University, Canada


The graduate program at Memorial University offers higher education with a focus on preparing prospective students for careers in research in the field and other related disciplines. The political Science program offers research in all the major subfields of the discipline: international relations, comparative politics, Canadian politics, public policy, and political theory.

The faculty’s research interests cover a wide range: election campaigns and voting behaviour; ethnic conflict within and between states; public administration; provincial politics; aboriginal law and politics; gender and politics; the politics of financial regulation; health care policy and governance; foreign policy; international peace building; the history of international thought; and identity and political theory.

The program provides students with an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of politics and may also be used for professional career development (e.g. public servants; individuals in the private sector with links to policy and politics; and individuals in non-governmental or voluntary organizations).

  • MA – The Master of Arts program involves courses and a thesis and can be completed in onetwo years of full-time study.

Funding and Eligibility for the Political Science Scholarship

Memorial University of Newfoundland offers highly competitive funding and scholarship packages to full-time graduate students who are eligible academically, both domestic and international students, in all eligible graduate research programs. Since the institution offers competitive funding packages, the amount of funding an applicant will receive upon successful admission will depend on the strength of the candidate’s application.

The following are funding eligibility periods for Memorial University graduate students maintaining full-time status and academic standing:

  • One-year master’s programs: one year (three semesters)
  • All other master’s programs: two years (six semesters)
  • PhD programs: four years (twelve semesters)
  • Transfer to a new program: the start of the eligibility period of the program being transferred to is the commencement date of the program being transferred from

Sources of Internal Funding 

  • School of Graduate Studies fellowships – ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per year
  • graduate assistantships (employment) – ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 in accordance with the TAUMUN collective agreement
  • supervisor grants/contracts – ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 per year
  • special initiatives funding – ranging from $5,000 to $8,000 per year

Admission Requirement for the Political Science Scholarship at Memorial University

  • MA – Bachelor’s degree (minimum second class) in a relevant area of study (generally political science or a closely-related discipline) and 75% average over last 20 courses
